  • BCB began as one of the seats of the Banque du Congo Belge, founded in 1909 by Belgium's "Banque d'Outre-mer". From 1911 to 1952 it held the privilege of being the "Institut d'Emission" (the note-issuing authority). In 1922 a branch opened in Usumbura — now Bujumbura — the Lake Tanganyika port and the region's commercial centre. In 1964, following Burundi's independence and changes to banking regulation, the branch became the Banque de Crédit de Bujumbura, BCB's name today. In July 2008 BCB signed a partnership with the Bank Of Africa Group, and since 2010 Bank Of Africa has been majority-held by BMCE Bank Of Africa, part of the BMCE Bank Group.
